Blato
Blato is situated in the middle of the island on the main island road, 40 km from Korcula. It is a traditional agricultural centre and the centre of all agricultural products of the island. Surrounded by fertile fields and rich woodland, early agricultural cultivation was flourishing here as early as greek and Roman times (Potirna and Znjan). Archeological finds witness to the existence of a settlement in Blato in the prehistoric and Illyrian times. The prehistoric inhabitiant of Blato was a shepherd, hunter and fisherman. Several early Christian churches were built in Blato and around it. The field of Zlinje divides the South and North part of B lato with one of the most beautiful elm tree alley in this part of the Mediterranean. A small hotel, "Lipa", is in the middle of Blato. The "Blato" modern wine Cellar produces wines from the field of Blato and other regions of the island. Blato is also an industrial centre. The "Radez" firm has a world-wide reputation for producing the steel hatches. Blato is the town in the interior of the island of Korčula, 4 km away from the sea and only 7 km from Vela Luka.
The sound of swords of courageous knights still resounds through its streets, while the scenes of the chivalrous play of Kumpanija always impress the visitors. Blato will satisfy all gourmet tastes with its delicious dishes and quality wines.
